Brits like to remind people that Zac Posen studied in London - but, regardless, he is the toast of New York. Just how someone so young and relatively new to the fashion scene has been elevated to red carpet dressing - and as a design force to be reckoned with - is a fascinating tale.
He has a creative family: his father Stephen is a painter, and his mime and visual artist sister doubles as the creative director of his company, Alexandra Outspoke LLC. (His corporate lawyer mother, Susan runs the company.)
Zac Posen also attended St Ann's School for the Arts in Brooklyn and studied pattern-making at Parson's School of Design. It was in 1999 that he did a BA course in Womenswear at Central Saint Martins in London. His New York Fashion Week debut, for spring/summer 2002, couldn't have been better choreographed - with the New York Times announcing: "A Star is Born". Zac was born in New York on October 24 1980, Zac Posen grew up in a Spring Street loft in SoHo . At 16, Posen began two years as an intern at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute. His first show, held in a synagogue, was styled by the artist Julian Schnabel's daughter, Stella, and featured appearances by Sophie Dahl and Karen Elson, with Anna Wintour on the front row .
"If Karl Lagerfeld can sell a dress at H&M and still make Chanel couture -well, I'm fascinated and I'm not worried about it," Posen said in an interview in Vogue in 2005. "I don't believe in the conservatism of fashion. Fashion is a thrill."
